Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-chief of Canada,
on the Occasion of the Canadian Forces Day

OTTAWA— Canadian Forces Day is an occasion for us to thank our military men and women for all that they do—and for their willingness to put everything on the line to protect our country and the values that lie at the heart of our democratic society.

It is difficult to grasp the magnitude of the Canadian Forces’ contribution to this country. Its members—from local cadet groups to northern Rangers, to soldiers serving overseas—not only help to maintain peace and security at home and abroad, but also embody a particular set of values, a strong sense of duty to country, community, and friends and family. In uniform, as in civilian life, the members of the Canadian Forces are here to serve.

On this very important day, I would like to extend heartfelt thanks on behalf of all Canadians to the men and women of the Canadian Forces for their unyielding dedication to this country and its citizens.

David Johnston
