Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston,
Governor General of Canada, on the occasion of National Child Day

OTTAWA—Children are contributing to our nation in real and meaningful ways. I have seen this throughout my travels; children willing and able to stand up to societal challenges, to help those in need, and to make this a better country.

Each year, our country marks National Child Day in Canada, celebrating the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. We have a responsibility, not only to raise our children with the values and ideals of a conscientious citizen, but also to provide them with a society in which they can flourish. To do any less would be a failure on our part.

On this occasion, I hope that we can all find a way to make this a stronger, more just nation, where children can safely and actively participate in the shaping of Canada.

David Johnston
