Message from the Governor General of Canada on the Occasion of National Health and Fitness Day
OTTAWA— I am delighted to celebrate National Health and Fitness Day which will henceforth be held each year on the first Saturday in June.
Regular physical activity has tangible benefits for the health, well-being and quality of life of people of all ages. Sharon and I take every opportunity to instill in our children and grandchildren the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. When we take care of ourselves, we are better able to take care of our loved ones and play an active role in strengthening our communities.
In this Year of Sport in Canada, our country is hosting numerous sporting events—notably the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the IIHF Ice Hockey World Junior Championship and the World Men’s Curling Championship—that are undoubtedly inspiring Canadians far and wide to engage in physical activity.
On National Health and Fitness Day, I encourage you to learn more about the many events and initiatives taking place that will help to make Canada a fitter nation!
