Message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston,
Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of Commonwealth Day

OTTAWA—The theme of this year’s Commonwealth Day is “An Inclusive Commonwealth.”

In 1931, Canada joined this association that today includes 53 countries. Its vision is to create and sustain a Commonwealth that is mutually respectful, resilient, peaceful and prosperous and that cherishes quality, diversity and shared values.

As The Queen’s representative in Canada, I am proud that our country is continuously looking for opportunities to include everyone, to celebrate our rich diversity and to reinforce the vision espoused by the countries that make up the Commonwealth.

Throughout her reign, Her Majesty, who will celebrate her 90th birthday next month, has fostered an inclusive approach within this great family of nations.

Let us take the opportunity that this day provides to reaffirm our shared commitment to promoting democracy and good governance, respect for human rights and the rule of law, and sustainable development.

David Johnston
