It’s wonderful to be with you today at Rideau Hall, the home of the people of Canada.

A week ago I was in the Middle East— Jordan, Israel and the West Bank.

It’s a fascinating part of the world. And of course, sadly, it’s a troubled one.

But one thing we don’t often see from our vantage point here in Canada are the hope and the humanity of so many people there.

It’s something that members of the Canadian Armed Forces are well aware of.

Some of you may even have served in the Middle East, and in fact last week in Jerusalem I met with some of your colleagues who are contributing to peace and stability in the region.

I was reminded once again of the very important work you do for Canada, sometimes in very dangerous situations, far from home. You do it to protect Canada, to stand up for our values and to strengthen security for others.  

And you are, in many ways, the human face that Canada projects to the world.

I’m so proud to serve as your commander-in-chief and to recognize your remarkable efforts today.

I feel particularly privileged to do so on the eve of Remembrance Day, when we pause to think of all who have sacrificed for our country, past and present.

Wherever you serve and in whatever capacity, you do so in an exemplary manner.

Your approach is reflected in the motto of the Order of Military Merit: OFFICIUM ANTE COMMODUM—“Service Before Self.”

More than that, you are also dedicated professionals who inspire others to achieve excellence in all that they do.

As I often say to those who are invested into this order: never underestimate the power of your example. No matter what your particular role, you are all leaders, and people within your respective organizations look up to you.

Today, Canada recognizes your outstanding contributions and thanks you for your courage, your dedication and your excellence.

I also want to recognize and warmly applaud the roles your families and loved ones play in your success. I know that they, too, make sacrifices that allow you to serve our country.

I am very grateful. Canada is grateful.

Thank you all for your service.

Thank you all for your sacrifice. 

Thank you for standing up for our ideals at home and abroad.

And congratulations on this well-deserved honour. I wish you all the very best.
