Message from the Governor General of Canada
on the Occasion of National Health and Fitness Day
OTTAWA— As most of you know, I am a firm believer in physical activity in all its forms. I taught my daughters early in life how important it is to remain active, and I am doing likewise with my grandchildren. It therefore gives me great pleasure to celebrate National Health and Fitness Day.
Sports play an important part in my daily life, as they do for millions of others, and I know that it can be challenging to find the time in our busy schedules to play a sport or exercise. But the benefits linked to physical activity have been shown time and time again, and new research in this area bears this out: moving has many benefits for the body and does wonders for the soul.
On this day, I invite all Canadians to try something new—walk, run, swim or cycle—and take advantage of our vast and majestic country to enjoy the fresh air.
Let us all make the commitment to a healthy body, healthy mind and healthy nation!
