Message from the Governor General
Following the Passing of Paul Gérin-Lajoie
OTTAWA— With the recent passing of Paul Gérin-Lajoie, Canada has lost a pioneer, a great builder and a true visionary. Determined to help create a better future for generations to come, Mr. Gérin-Lajoie worked tirelessly to make our country the ideal place in which our youth can grow and flourish.
Dedicated to his two great passions—education and international assistance—Paul Gérin-Lajoie made an impact that can still be felt right across this country. The lasting influence of his efforts will continue to help make Canada a country that looks outward to the world around us.
I was fortunate enough to have met this great Quebecker, and I know that the legacy that he left to his country and to the rest of the world is a powerful symbol that will be forever etched in our history. In addition to bringing about profound social change and caring for others both here and abroad, he devoted his life to the common good and to Canada’s development as a knowledge society that is open to the world.
On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my deepest condolences to his family, his loved ones and to his many friends.
