Hello,
Welcome to the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards Gala.
This is my very first gala, which just so happens to coincide with the 30th anniversary of these awards.
Thank you, Susan, for that kind introduction. It’s wonderful to share the stage with a woman and artist I have long admired.
In fact, I see many people here with us this evening whom I admire. I’m honoured to celebrate the tremendous achievements of our performing artists.
Of course, there is no age limit to making art. The proof? The students from Nunavut Sivuniksavut and the Inuuqatigiit Centre here with us.
You inspire me and I see in you the promise of the future.
I’ll also add that it’s wonderful for us to be back here, in person, after two long years, to honour great Canadians in the performing arts, and to recognize our country’s incredible depth of talent. Let music, performances and laughter fill the air.
Your creativity inspires us. Your works, in all its forms, are threads that help weave our evolving Canadian tapestry.
You help tell our varied and complex stories that shape our Canadian identity.
Storytelling is how we come to know the world, and how we come to know ourselves. Our individual and collective stories represent the fabric of our nation.
Throughout your careers, you have brought stories to life and helped to create safe spaces for all people to tell their stories: stories from Indigenous communities, from marginalized and diverse peoples. Stories of success and failure, love and joy, the good and the bad. Most of all, stories that say something true, that make us look at the world differently.
Tonight, we celebrate all your accomplishments and thank you for your contributions to Canada.
I would also like to acknowledge and thank those of you here tonight who work to support and promote Canadian talent. Your work is invaluable.
Have a wonderful evening and again, congratulations.
Enjoy the show.
Thank you.
