No community should be targeted because of its beliefs. Yet, six years ago today, that is exactly what happened when Canadians witnessed a horrible act of Islamophobia: a deadly shooting at a mosque in the City of Québec.

As we look back on this horrific event and continue to mourn with the families and community that were affected, let us reaffirm that Islamophobia has no place in Canada. Together, we must condemn discrimination, hatred or violence directed towards the Muslim community, or any other people. It is our collective responsibility to promote understanding, respect and acceptance of all individuals.

The recent and rapid rise of Islamophobia in communities across Canada and around the world is concerning. No one should be targeted, harassed or abused because of who they are or what they believe. When we see hate rising in Canada—in all its forms and iterations—we cannot be silent. 

Let us work together to build an equal society that values diversity, fosters inclusivity and celebrates the contributions of every Canadian. A country where we are all free to be who we are.
