I wish to acknowledge that we are meeting in Treaty Six Territory – the traditional territory of the Nakota Sioux, Cree, Dene, Blackfoot, and Saulteaux.

This land is also home to the Métis Settlements and the Métis Nation of Alberta within the historical Northwest Métis Homeland.

I am happy to present these honours to you, here in Edmonton, close to the communities where you live.

By being appointed to the Order of Canada, your names join thousands of others – from Maurice “The Rocket” Richard to author Hugh McLennan, rock singer Art Bergmann and prominent Albertan politicians like Grant MacEwan.

This year, other remarkable Albertans were appointed, including Frances Elizabeth Wright, a well-known advocate for social justice and co-founder of the Famous 5 Foundation in Calgary.

The Order of Canada recognizes people who, like you, have enriched Canada’s cultural, sporting and intellectual life.

Scientists and innovators whose work enhances healthcare.

People who have advanced education and social justice.

Entrepreneurs who have fostered economic growth and contributed to charitable causes within their communities.

The snowflake insignia that you are about to receive also represents Canadian diversity. It represents how countless contributions from diverse individuals make our country stronger.

The Order of Canada recognizes excellence. It is also a call to celebrate the diversity that makes our country stronger.

Alberta’s first Muslim Lieutenant Governor, Salma Lakhani, embodies the importance of building a more inclusive Canada. She emphasizes how connected we are to each other, and that “when any one of us succeeds, we all succeed.”

So, I encourage you to use this recognition to keep pursuing excellence. To promote diversity and inclusion. And to give your actions even greater scope.
